Review on ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ BenQ SW270C PhotoVue Technology Reproduction Monitor - 2560X1440P, USB Hub, High Dynamic Range, Hardware Calibration, IPS by Rodney Nicholas

SW 271 Winner - but you have the latest version of Windows 10 for Benq Palette Master

I bought the SW271 almost a year after adding it to my "wish list" at Revain; couldn't decide to spend that much money on a monitor; Then, when I realized that my workstation computer was 7 years old and needed an upgrade - the decision was made for me - the CMOS battery started to give problems. After replacing that cheap little thing, I started adding bigger, more expensive, and good things. I was carried away. I replaced my old EVGA graphics card with an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, EVGA Platinum PSU and I made the list. I won't go any further other than replacing one of my two old (but good) 24" HP LP2475w monitors with this Benq SW271. I'm not a professional photographer or graphic artist. I'm just an avid hobbyist who enjoys both film and photography Enjoys digital photography.I have a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED with all the trappings (which I bought before it was unavailable or incredibly expensive - and not supported by the manufacturer - now I use Vuescan for scanning and love it).Use for editing I have Lightroom 6. So I had to learn about color management. I'm far from an expert, I use a Spyder 5 Elite and until I got this monitor I used Datacolor software. But I quickly realized that Benq's Palette Master is special because it actually works with the monitor hardware itself (it loads the LUT into the monitor, not the graphics card.) But I bumped into for major problems with this part. I downloaded the Palette Master software and the latest driver for my new monitor. None of them will work properly on my Windows 10 Pro operating system; I was under a lot of stress and trying to do my best, but the program just wasn't working. It kept trying to load drivers and everything and I had to keep using task manager to close it. After about a week I just gave up and started using the Datacolor software, but I had a nagging feeling that it was just wrong. Imagine my surprise yesterday when Microsoft finally decided to update my computer with the "April Update" version 1803 from 1709 - and as soon as I restarted Windows, the poor palette wizard was already waiting for me. I followed Image Science's instructions from the web and quickly, using an advanced program, I calibrated and tested my monitor and from the report I could see that it passed with flying colors, pun intended. Of course I understand that this is the manufacturer's software and I can only hope that the low delta values are correct. (Anyway, how should I know? I'm a skeptic :) To sum up an already lengthy review: I really like this monitor; It is elegant and beautiful and I will enjoy scanning and editing both my film and digital images. I really hope this helps anyone else having problems with the Palette Master Elements software and prevents all the frustration and initial frustration I was having. EDIT: I'm going to downgrade the SW 271 from five stars to four: not because it's my fault, but because Benq refuses to update its Palette Master software to recognize my Datacolor SpyderX Elite colorimeter. Datacolor says it once sent information to Benq to update their PME software, but I waited several months and there was no action from Benq. I still love the monitor, but I'm disgusted with the "colorimeter" wars and discussions about what gear is best for calibrating the Palette Master. I am currently using Datacolor's Spyder X Elite software and it has actually calibrated my two monitors to the point of visually matching for the first time. I'm happy with that, which is a good thing as I think I'll have to go that route from now on unless Benq makes their software available for my colorimeter.
