Good value for money, but target and temperature measurement seem inconsistent, but with a tolerance of

A handy tool despite minor flaws. I bought it to test the temperature of different materials as our back deck needs to be replaced. Who would have thought that our current Trex deck would heat up to 140 degrees on a warm day, while some types of wood heat up to 170 degrees? Dark bricks heat up about 10 degrees warmer than light bricks. It also helps me understand how much warmer one outerwear can be compared to another. And I just checked our grill temperature gauge and found that we have a nice 22 degree drop in temperature for our home's air conditioner. Man and his tools. As for course accuracy, I think it's a few inches at 3 feet. I tested this by placing a hot cup of coffee on the floor and "illuminating" it with a laser from about waist height. By moving the laser to different points on the coffee's surface as well as on the bottom, I was able to determine that the laser was pointing about 2-3 inches to the right and slightly higher (about a meter). There is a label on the gun to indicate that the sensor area expands as objects are removed (e.g. 8 cm diameter at 96 cm distance). I thought this meant the gun took an average across that diameter, but in my opinion it reads a smaller dot in that diameter. I will note that it seems more accurate to just ignore the laser and look directly at the line from above. But the laser is clearly firing to the right of it. As for the temperature, I've had times when I thought it was 2-3 degrees lower; however, this is still within the range of +/- 1.5°C specified in the tolerances. I'm a bit obsessed with the temperature in the house and have several digital thermometers that are very close together (by a small fraction of a degree). I put two of these on the shelf for a while and then checked the temperature with this laser thermometer. Both read about 72.0F while the laser read about 69.5F. But it's still without the Celsius rating. I later took the same measurement and got more accurate readings. But it works very well for my needs.

Pros
  • . BEST ACCURACY: The distance-to-point ratio is 12:1, which means that the laser handpiece compared to the most other thermometers can accurately measure targets at longer distances.
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
