Review on Hang-On Marine Color RDC 150: Advanced Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer for 40 Gallon Saltwater Aquariums by Destiny Gvozdeva

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this skimmer. For such a low price, I really had very low expectations. However, it actually works quite well! GOOD: - Very quiet operation - Started pulling all sorts of nasty debris out of my tank almost immediately - Easy to set up if you're relatively familiar with the concept of most HOB skimmers. THE BAD: - I couldn't just use this as a HOB device as the listing would suggest. I used this on a glass canopy breeder 40 (the one with a 2" strip of plastic on the back that can be cut to accommodate cables and equipment). Unfortunately, it's too big to fit in that gap. The only workaround I could think of was to pull the hood forward a bit, thereby increasing the clearance just enough to accommodate the skimmer body. The hanging clamp will not fit in a standard rimmed aquarium. I had to come up with various cumbersome workarounds to keep the skimmer in place as best as possible. This is certainly not ideal as the device could fall into the tank, onto the ground etc. I understand it's a nano skimmer, but the catch tank is very small. I have to empty it several times a day even though there is only one fish in the tank. The stickers on the skimmer look pretty cool but mine literally fell off within 24 hours. VERDICT: A very good little skimmer. Wonderful. suitable for such a cheap unit - Cannot be hung on a standard rim tank without considerable effort and even then not particularly secure - Cannot be used with a standard glass roof without compromising the function/effectiveness of the lid - Will probably work great in a sump or a rimless tank; not ideal for anything other than temporary or short term use as a hanger in a standard tank.
