Underestimated for Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures

2017 Safari Ltd Psittacosaurus 2017 was a big year for Safari Ltd dinosaur figures. Fans have requested such impressive characters as their feathered Tyrannosaurus Rex, their magnificent Velociraptor, the massive Giganotosaurus, and the majestic Diplodocus, to name a few. Somewhere in the commotion, this little blue-eyed beauty got lost! The scale detail is impressive as this is a fairly small figure, only measuring about five and a half inches long. It is wonderful to see that the Safari has a large plume of feathers on its tail. However, I would like to see some variation in her sculpture. They are naturally too uniform and look more like a fin than a feather. A break here, waves there, etc. would make them more realistic. In general, this is a small problem, but it may bother some. The beak is well shaped and outlined in black to contrast with the rest of the muzzle. Psittacosaurus looks like it has an adorable goofy smile from certain angles. Safari gave his Psittacosaurus a pair of striking blue eyes, adding to the appeal. Unfortunately, one eye of my model has a badly colored pupil. I seem to have had really bad luck with dinosaur eyes. Although I'm sure this is an isolated case. The color reproduction is also quite accurate. Psittacosaurus is one of the first dinosaurs with preserved pigment. (It was only the third dinosaur whose fossil pigmentation was deciphered.) So we know it was darker on top and lighter on the bottom (this is called countershading) and mottled. I have a feeling it could have been a bit more obscure, but its accuracy is impressive as this information was released just a year before this number was released. Safari is always at the forefront of scientific rigor and that's one of the many reasons I love them! If you haven't picked this one up yet, I wholeheartedly recommend it. This is truly a hidden gem among Safari Ltd's many prehistoric gems.

Pros
  • FIRST DISCOVERY: Psittacosaurus was first discovered in 1922 in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, during an expedition organized by the American Museum of Natural History. Psittacosaurus was described and named the following year. Its name means "parrot lizard" because it had a deep, curved beak resembling that of a parrot.
