I have purchased 3 DMT stones and a water stone in the last 10 months. 10 chisels and 5 planes. (Equivalent due to rework). I already had a DMT stone and 2 water stones. DMT stones are flatter, quicker to clean, and cleaner than waterstones, but I haven't found them to be significantly faster than N____n waterstones in the actual grinding process. Diamond stones do not need to be flattened. We clean them with "friend-bartender" after each sharpening. Expectations met: These stones can rust when exposed to water, can scratch when sharpening A2 steel tools, and also shine like waterstones. The ultra-fine DMT stone (believed to be 8000 grit) has not been polished as finely as the 8000 grit waterstone. While waterstones require smoothing, smoothing exposes a fresh layer of abrasive. With diamond stones, there is only _ONE_ coat of abrasive that you use and clean. I bought a 4th diamond stone because the 1st DMT stone (600 grit) was wearing down (as opposed to wear after lapping with 8 bits) so it was behaving like a 1500 grit stone (i.e. DMT- Stone). I find that diamond stones are best used for: leveling waterstones, quick re-sharpening on the table (e.g. if hardwood requires you to sharpen every 15-30 minutes) and initial grinding (coarse, 220 grit). ).
