Review on πŸ’‘ Enhanced ATP RE-5 Solenoid for Automatic Transmission Control by Michael Langelius

Revainrating 5 out of 5

You can do that. Good for transmissions and parts

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ with an AW4 4 speed automatic transmission. Recently the check engine light came on. Codes P0700, P0753, and P0715 are transmission related. I bought this solenoid kit based on the reviews on the Revain and Jeep forums. (Very good DIY article with photos: (.) In the attached photo after installation (front left of car), the YELLOW circles are the shift solenoids (orange wire) and the WHITE circle is the overdrive solenoid (blue wire ). ) and The RED circles are the electrical connections. Removal/installation is easy: unscrew the screw that holds the solenoid. Disconnect the electrical plastic connector. Gradually pull the solenoid housing to separate it from the transmission. Refit in reverse order but make sure to attach each BLACK wire to the solenoid mounting screw. This provides bulk and also keeps the wire out of the way. The black stripe on each solenoid is one of the plastic wire retainers provided. I have used them. They just snap into place but you have to be sure you don't block the vents in the solenoid. It's easy to see when you hold them in your hands. NOTE: As I said, the installation is easy, but I want to warn you: v Be very careful when disconnecting the cable connector from the old solenoid. These connectors have been in hot oil for at least 15 years and are therefore likely to become brittle. Trust me on that. If you have the tools and skills to replace the transmission filter, you can replace these solenoids. If you are attempting this job I would recommend buying/installing a new filter and pan cover gasket. They're not that expensive and you've already done the dirty work. Much luck.

Pros
  • Solenoids
Cons
  • Don't really like it, it's ok
