Don't buy the Whisper 10! The 40 works great and costs a little more than the 20, which also works - you can control the airflow with the little valve that comes with the pump. I have five tanks that I have been using for over 8 years and they all use whisper pumps. When using air filters, I use slightly more pump than specified for the appropriate tank size. I bought two 10s, two 20s and five 40s pumps. I have 5, 10, 20 and 30 gallon tanks. Now I use 20 for 10 and 40 for 20 and 30 gallons. The 10th wasn't powerful enough to create enough current to filter the water in my 5 or 10 gallon aquariums, rendering it virtually useless. One of the 40's was noisy, but I was able to open the pump (unscrew the bottom) and tighten the nut holding the stack of metal plates near the power cord, this stopped the rattling that was making the noise. I have had great luck with Whisper pumps, they are quieter than other brands in the same price range.
