I'm a fan of Bosch tools and the GMS120 is no exception. It's an improvement over the old 20-year-old Spike-Finder in terms of what it can do, albeit nearly twice as much. It comes with a battery that's nice and a case that's really useful. Perhaps most impressive of all, it comes with a multi-page user manual that describes a number of different methods for improving the accuracy of your readings. It's not obvious and adds to the usefulness of the tool I think is right. However, I compared the GMS120 to the Zircon HD900c (only available at Home Depot as far as I can tell) and ultimately decided to stick with the Zircon block. . Zircon offered slightly better functionality, but ease of use was the reason for my choice. A key difference is that the Zircon device scans spikes in two different modes: normal and deep scan. The theory is that you don't necessarily want the scanner to find something deeper in the wall (pex etc.) and misidentify it as a stud, so it only scans up to 3/4" in normal mode. Deep Scan scans up to 1.5 inches. The deep scan mode comes in handy when working with double layers of drywall or when looking for an empty cavity instead of a stud. The Bosch device only has one spike-finding mode, which seems to match Zircon's deep-scan mode, as it goes out to 1.5 inches. The Zircon device recognizes what it is seeing by the color of the LCD backlight and by the text or characters on the display. myself. I thought colored lighting was a gimmick until I tried it. I found it very convenient. Bosch uses a colored LED around the hole in the center of the scanner to convey the same information, but it didn't work for me. As other reviewers point out, the LED is so bright you have to turn on the display backlight to even read it. And the hole you are supposed to insert the marker tool into turns pitch black so you can hardly see what you are doing. Zircon makes accurate marking much easier by projecting a red arrow onto the surface where it suspects the center of the object below. All in all, I think the GMS120 is a good tool that can definitely be useful. . However, I think the Zircon HD900c is a better choice for around the same price.
