Can't find the same center

Either I'm using it wrong or something because this thing can't locate the bolt. I've tried turning the stud finder on against the wall and in a couple of places I've tried turning it on away from the wall and making circles with it to see if it can be calibrated. He never even shows me anywhere near the center of the tip and tells me the tip is 1-2 inches on center in the same area. If it's user error I'll keep playing with it, but it seems unreliable at the moment. It's also annoying to find…

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • There are flaws

I've used it a few times and it recognizes so many things that it's hard to use. I actually gave it away for a $12 yellow branded one that works great. If you need to find something deep this can work great, for normal studs it finds nails, wire, wood and just freaks out. Not sure I'll ever need this as I wanted to find bolts to screw the bottom (squeaky bottom). It didn't work and if I thought about it I would send it back. I'm sure it's great under the right conditions, but I don't know how…

Can't tell wood from metal = NOT GOOD

I don't like writing bad reviews but this thing is a dog with fleas. I went through the instructions and used them for their intended purpose. Mount the sensor on metal. I was looking for the main water shut off valve in the house we bought 2 years ago. The genius who finished the basement sealed the valve with drywall, which means he needed this device. I knew the approximate location of the valve. So I decided to buy this detector to determine where the pipe and valve are. Unfortunately, this

High cost and many design flaws

I really expected more from such a good company. I would not recommend this Spikefinder to anyone. I will give you a list of the main problems below. But the smaller and cheaper stud finders do it with no problem. All of my testing was done clean on a standard drywall, wood stud, standard residential plumbing. I would say #2, visibility is probably the main issue and really needed to be addressed before the product was made and released. 1. Discrepancy - Readings were everywhere even when I…

Do not buy. Couldn't find a wooden stand behind a tiled shower screen.

SUMMARY: Don't buy. I tried two devices and couldn't reliably find wooden posts behind a tiled wall. I'm a handyman and sometimes need to find wooden studs behind tiled shower walls to install safety rails. Traditional nail finders work great on regular drywall surfaces. But when you have thicker materials and other materials like a cement baseplate or a HardiBacker with tiles on it, the search becomes more difficult. water pipes or electric cables. Checking by drilling a small pilot hole in…

Good choice. but read the manual

I'm a fan of Bosch tools and the GMS120 is no exception. It's an improvement over the old 20-year-old Spike-Finder in terms of what it can do, albeit nearly twice as much. It comes with a battery that's nice and a case that's really useful. Perhaps most impressive of all, it comes with a multi-page user manual that describes a number of different methods for improving the accuracy of your readings. It's not obvious and adds to the usefulness of the tool I think is right. However, I compared the
