I use this when I want my 40 lb pooch to have a range of motion beyond a typical 6 foot lead. She "stalks" the squirrels and surprises them by approaching a tree before the leash ends. Walking on the beach is great, I can never take her off the leash, she has too many dogs but she keeps getting better. Exercise because it can go from 50 feet back to 50 feet forward in one deadbeat — we call it a hundred-foot dash. It's not used every day, but I take it to the park, select walks, and the beach.
