It's not immediately readable, but it works. It takes the temperature about as quickly as any old-fashioned thermometer you put under your tongue. Compared to others that have an even rounder grip, it even reads a quarter faster at room temperature, although it's more waterproof than these, so that's a plus. I'm giving 4 stars because of the price, but overall someone is disappointed with the use of Instant Read in the description.
