A light fleece will do for most Portland weather conditions. At temperatures above 40 degrees, the light fleece offers exactly the wind and weather protection I need. I'm prone to overheating, so your mileage may vary. I have tried lightweight waterproof jackets from various brands and this is one of my favorites so far. The last Helly Hansen that I've finally worn out after over a decade of loyal service. Unfortunately they don't make this model anymore (it was a padded jacket with 4 outside pockets which I thought was perfect). Shirt in warmer weather doesn't make your hands feel sticky, which I appreciate. The rest of the upper body lining is mesh with a mesh pocket on the right chest (I prefer the left one like my old Hansen but you can't have everything I guess). I wouldn't mind a taffeta lining throughout, but it would also make the jacket heavier. I have 4 waterproof jackets, this one, a Marmot Precip jacket from about 7 years ago, a Marmot Sidehill Convertible with MemBrain and a new Marmot. Precipitation with the new nano pro impregnation. Haven't tried the new Precip yet but they seem to have adjusted the recipe for this jacket a bit so maybe it's a little more breathable than the old model. I don't think it's fair to compare the Sidehill to the Hansen as the Sidehill is much heavier so any subjective measure of breathability is bound to be skewed. Sidehill is just a warmer jacket with the same effort. But the Precip and Hansen are quite comparable in weight, so I think a fair comparison can be made between the Old Precip and this new Hansen jacket. My subjective assessment is that the HellyTech waterproofing is more breathable than the old Precip waterproofing. This jacket looks good, fits well, has a soft fabric that doesn't make too much noise, is waterproof and very breathable. For the city and light hikes, this is a great jacket. Precip, which can be purchased at a bargain price, also has very attractive properties. It's very easy. Packs away in its own pocket in a handy little pouch. Features oversized zips which are great when hiking to keep you cool. Helly Hansen has no zippers. But it's fully lined, which Precip doesn't have. Maybe that's a wrong comparison. Probably not as I can justify having both. One is a great all rounder and the other is more technical in nature. If you are looking for an affordable lightweight waterproof jacket you will not be disappointed.
