I almost didn't get this because the reviews quoted terrible chemical smells but I gave it a go and am very happy. In my case, at least, it turned out to be the typical electric motor lubricant smell found in many mechanized devices, albeit a bit pungent. Also, it comes from the base of the device, which is far from your precious base. Worst case you can argue that the oils leave the grinding chamber, but I don't see them ever entering and contaminating the ground coffee. All 3 settings delivered the desired consistency in a relatively short time. Clean up was pretty quick. Easy with a bit of improvisation: the maid system requires you to twist the lid a few times to activate it - a friction-generating action that I imagine will put the seal/latch mechanism to the test over time . I simply removed the lid and manually squeezed the maid with my finger before shaking off the ground coffee and hand-rinsing the components. me) and the puzzling fact that using it according to the manufacturer's instructions can lead to faster wear of the product. Recommended for the budget grinder willing to deal with minor imperfections. I will definitely update if anything changes for better or worse. Update March 13, 2019: How time flies! +1 year of almost daily use and it works just as well as the first day. The chemical smell is gone and the maid and I have a very warm relationship.
