I've been keeping reef aquariums for over 30 years, ever since Reefer drooled at the thought of Julian Sprang writing his next magazine article. Instant Ocean is not the industry standard in my opinion, there are definitely better salt mixes you can buy, but in the end it doesn't really matter as Instant Ocean is definitely good enough to keep any coral alive and thriving that I come across am confronted. I don't know why a guy says go to BRS for salt. BRS sells it for $63 and Revain sells it for $44 with free shipping if you have Prime. The reason this salt is the most popular is because it gives you the best bang for your buck and although it is one of the cheapest salts it is still a very good salt. like five different things that need to be added in precise proportions to create the perfect batch of salt. It's too complicated and just an accident waiting in the wings. I'm a fan of Red Sea salt, but at almost twice the price per gallon of water and not seeing a difference in coral growth, I slowly returned to the immediate ocean. My advice to you: if you're making a mixture using say 50 gallons of water, make sure it's mixed with pumps and properly aerated for at least 24 hours. Do not add salt below 1.026ppm as the salt level will increase as the mix goes through the 24 hour cycle. I usually stop at 1,020ppm and then check again 12 hours later and add more salt if needed. When this is done, check the water for ALK, Calk and of course the temperature. Heat or cool the batch to your tank temperature and then check the Alk, Cal and Mg values. If any of these don't fit in your aquarium, add the required ingredients in small amounts until you can get them as close to the aquarium water as possible. As a general rule, I rarely need to add anything to Instant Ocean, but sometimes it's low in calcium. Nothing fancy, but enough to make me feel better about fixing it.
