You might as well make your own

My mother died about 5 years ago and my father was so upset that he threw away all the family photos so he wouldn't remember them. Luckily he found the negatives, so I digitized them. At first I just wanted to get started and didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I went ahead and ordered a Kodak Mobile Film Scanner for $39. It was the cheapest. After further research I decided this probably wouldn't be the best solution if I wanted good quality. I checked YouTube on how to make my own scanner using a phone, photo frame glass, a tablet (for light), a box and some cans of tuna. I downloaded and tried the Kodak app. The quality was terrible! So I figured a Kodak portable film scanner would be about the same. As per other reviews, this is a simple construction made from a sturdy cardboard material. You turn it on (batteries not included), place the negative on the flashlight, and place your cell phone so that the camera lens is over the hole. No matter how good your camera is, it's still blurry and poor quality. My phone is the iPhone X, it has a great camera - one of the best. I think that's mainly because you're photographing something so small and you expect it to be bigger and sharper. I got the same result with a homemade scanner. Pros: โ€ข Less expensive than other scanners, but still not worth the price. I agree with other reviewers who said it only costs about $10 instead of $50. โ€ข Suitable when you just want to see what the negative is but the quality isn't good enough to print a photo. Cons: โ€ข Does not produce good quality photos. .โ€ข Overpriced. I've included a few test photos showing the difference in quality between a Kodak and another scanner, and the different sizes of the negatives. Keep in mind that these negatives are old and of poor quality to begin with.
