Badly designed. do not buy

I was looking for a film scanner and after researching specialized scanners for $70-$140 I decided I choose this device. I figured that using much more powerful electronics in a modern cell phone and its 12 megapixel camera should give just as good, if not better, results. This device and its app are failing miserably! 1- The application does not automatically detect film edges. . Does not automatically adjust the backlight. Doesn't do any of the "smart" things you would expect. He just takes a

I agree "You could also build your own "

I am amazed that Kodak brought this product to market. It's literally just a box with a battery pack inside. However, I decided to try it on my iPhone 8. I downloaded the app and tried my best to get a decent "scan" (i.e. a photo of the lit negative using my iPhone's built-in camera) by positioning the camera over the hole in the top of the box. I adjusted the settings, the size, selected different options, but you see what I saw (second picture). Rearranged camera, corrected settings. Just a…

Pros
  • SUPER EASY TO USE | Place the film in the tray, place the lens over the hole and touch the screen to focus and take a photo | Note. Resolution dependent on slide and camera quality | If images appear blurry, don't forget to tap the screen to auto-focus - and keep trying! This is just a toy, but great photos are possible!

Meets my needs for a limited number of slides and negatives

The problem with universal slide scanners is that cheap scanners have mediocre cameras and scanners with good cameras are, well, expensive. Luckily, Kodak (which was late with the digital photography revolution) realized that today's phone cameras are very good and that we stupid people only need something to hold a hundred or two slides or negatives. The Kodak Handy Film Scanner is perfect for this niche. You can build your own scanner, but they've packed all the parts into one handy package…

You might as well make your own

My mother died about 5 years ago and my father was so upset that he threw away all the family photos so he wouldn't remember them. Luckily he found the negatives, so I digitized them. At first I just wanted to get started and didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I went ahead and ordered a Kodak Mobile Film Scanner for $39. It was the cheapest. After further research I decided this probably wouldn't be the best solution if I wanted good quality. I checked YouTube on how to make my own scanner
