Review on Abatron WoodEpox Replacemnt Compound Gallon by Michael Lucas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent, durable and very competitive price for this lot.

This is a very good product and fantastic price for the quantity (approx 2 gallons by volume) for such a strong epoxy. It's slightly different from other epoxies I've used. It's clearly strong enough for structural use (this isn't explicitly stated, but the PSI endurance is obviously very high) and after a few hours it's fully weatherproof and suitable for drilling, sandblasting and painting. . It's not quite like other epoxies I've used: when you start mixing it it's more like a cake, so don't try to mix the ingredients together. It is best to place the same parts on a piece of foil and remove them, folding the two parts by hand again and again until the colors have completely mixed. Once mixed, it's like a hard putty, but too heavy to "spread" like peanut butter. So it's better to sculpt the desired shape in your hands and press the shape in place. I suggest trying it out on a golf ball sized test piece to see how it heals and takes shape. When making your first batch, start with a total size of no more than two hamburgers (one hamburger per bucket). You can always add more as you go. Keep in mind that mixing the two parts creates its own chemical heat (this is mentioned in the instructions) so the thicker parts will give off and retain more heat and thus the thicker parts will cure faster. Doctor's latex gloves will do. A trowel or spatula didn't suit me so well because they're poorly distributed. It is very well suited for vertical application as it does not settle as much as softer fillers. A small downside is that the oil paint on it dries very slowly (this is mentioned in the instructions) so the paint dries but may never harden. / harden optimally. You can try sanding the surface to roughen it up before applying the oil based paint and do some trial and error with your samples to get a feel for how the paint will lay on it, if that's important. Overall I'm very happy with it, but like I said, it takes a bit of experience to get a feel for it. Be sure to play with a small sample or two. It heals in a few hours, so it doesn't take long to learn and it's well worth it. If you are going to use it to fix rotten wood, purchase their liquid wood product and read all directions carefully. This material saved me thousands by offsetting potential structural repairs in a complex application.
