Review on Sena Smart Cycling Helmet: Revolutionizing Safety and Connectivity in Cycling by Dave Hammon

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great technology, helmet too small/odd shape

These helmets are very small. The shape of the helmets in particular seems to be geared more towards spherical heads, while my partner and I tend to have oblong heads. There is room for us on the sides of the helmet, but not at the front or back. My partner's head size is 22 3/4" which according to the size chart should be comfortable in the medium size range, but based on the reviews here saying the helmets are on the small side, I bought her a large one that fits her comfortably (but no margin for error from front to back). My head is 24 inches so I also bought a large helmet, I thought it would be ok if the max size was 24 1/2 but I was very wrong. My head won't go into the helmet. When I put the helmet on my head, it lifts off the top, supported by the leading edge and the trailing edge, which of course gives me a headache from all the pressure on those two points. Since there's enough room on the sides of the helmet, I could tilt the helmet forward to block my view, or tilt it back with the mic pointing away from my face. Of course, none of these positions protect my head properly, and it's going to look silly. The communication technology in this helmet is fantastic. We can easily communicate from a block on a bike. We very rarely hear road or wind noise, most of the time we only hear ourselves, even when we're talking very quietly. You don't have to shout to be heard. Pairing helmets takes a few seconds once you get used to it. I'm almost ready to cut my helmet in half to use as a communications device as it works so well despite being useless as a security device. If that sounds unappealing to you, I would recommend not buying this helmet if you have a large head. Sena, please release the XL helmet and check the accuracy of your size. I don't know how many people have spherical heads and which are oblong, but my partner and I are not related at all and we have the same head shape (oblong), I think it's unlikely that we are the only ones.
