I admit to being a die-hard lover of kitchen gadgets. So when I saw this emollient, I had to have it. The idea is to poke a million little holes in the meat or chicken to allow the marinade to penetrate better. And when you make lots of tiny cuts in a tougher piece of meat, it really destroys tougher tissue. The device has many small knives (almost needles) that you use to poke and poke at the object you want to soften. Simply peaceful. I've tried this and it really works and it doesn't appreciably change the "look" of the meat you're tenderizing. But this device isn't for kids - it's VERY sharp and you could easily injure yourself if you're not careful or don't know better. Cleaning is not difficult once you learn the device separately. All of this can be washed in the dishwasher. But then again, these little blades are sharp, sharp, sharp. You want your wit to be disassemble and assemble. It would be a grave mistake not to wash as well - bacteria can easily hide in the block if it is not thoroughly cleaned.
