Review on πŸ“ Portable Raspberry Pi Monitor with 1600X768 Resolution and Built-In Speakers by Emmanuel Southers

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Surprisingly good quality, sharp but poor viewing angles, stretched too far

At this price I wasn't sure what I was going to get but I took a chance. In my case, I'm glad I did as it's an amazing quality screen (with some caveats). The resolution quoted is not a joke or a typo, you get a very real 1600 x 768 resolution screen, which is much higher than most other screens of this size and higher than any other screen at this price point (that I've found). And he's handsome, hunky and handsome, in my opinion. The worst thing about the screen is definitely the poor vertical viewing angles. If you don't look directly at the screen, but tilt it too high or too low, the picture suffers badly and becomes either too dark or very washed out. Perhaps more importantly, horizontal viewing angles are better, but still not great. Another positive is the built-in speaker (only one) which is very loud, surprisingly loud. The volume control is good - turning it down actually gives you the full volume range: 1 is very quiet, 50 is very loud (anything higher starts to distort). The headphone jack works perfectly. Another negative "aspect" (but one that doesn't really bother me about how I use the screen) is the literal aspect ratio controls, or lack thereof. In the version I received, the firmware only offers the option to toggle between "4:3", "5:4" or "Wide". So when I connect a Roku streaming device via HDMI, I can either get a full-width image (which is stretched too wide, wider than it should be 16:9) or I can change it to 4:3 to get a to get a compressed image. Image (leaving black areas on each side) or further shrink to 5:4 aspect ratio. Why isn't there a 16:9 option? According to the product description, 16:9 is supported, but I don't. I should note that how you use it matters. When I have it connected to my laptop it works fine, if a bit strange because setting the secondary monitor's resolution to 1600 x 768 leaves thin gray bars at the top and bottom, but setting it to 1920 x 1080 (which is then scaled down ) works fine or 1280 x 720 . There are a few other resolutions that might work, some with stripes on the sides or top and bottom, some full screen, you can experiment. In general I am satisfied with the screen, especially for this price. I don't expect large viewing angles. My biggest disappointment is the lack of a 16:9 setting, but I can live with that.
