They're probably good for real shaggy rugs, thick sheep rugs, etc., but if you have a deep Persian rug or other thin dense fibers stay away! I'm a "short loop rug" size, but even so, the prongs are very large and blunt - each spike tip is about as thick as the eating end of a finely pointed chopstick. (Or the metal part of a headphone jack, etc.) So with Persian rugs, with their thin, thick pile, you end up with a rug covered with strange indentations. My other carpet protectors are actual spikes (always thinner, much less dull) and while they looked scarier at first, they actually protect the carpet when placed under furniture legs, albeit slippery. I was so excited because they were self-adhesive, but it's no use the protector damaging the carpet instead of protecting it.
