Poor charging support

First of all, I'm an electronics engineer and I've dealt with most types of batteries in my projects. I also use and buy chargers fairly regularly. I have this 2013 Ford Taurus which I have recently found to be above normal parasitic battery drain which is intermittent but a fully charged battery will drop to 12.2 volts in 2 days and drop below the initial voltage in 5 days of inactivity . I always fix my electrical issues myself, but the difficulty of keeping track of things instead of just plugging in a stationary charger forced me to go with the charger option. So I got this B&D BM3B and it looks like it should work. But in testing I found that the charger charged steadily to 14.9 volts and then dropped to 13.8 volts. I argued that this was because my car's phantom load was draining the battery enough to put the B&D into absorption. Since I didn't want to recharge the battery, I decided to use a trickle charger for the car. Then I figured I'd use it to service some golf cart batteries over the winter. To check, I put this charger on and check the current and voltage. After the charger charged to 14.9 volts, the current decreased again until the voltage dropped to 13.8 volts. I was expecting the charger to stay on the 13.8V float until the battery self-discharge (about a month later) lowers the voltage, but no, in short order it was just repeating a full charge cycle, although that wasn't the one case was need. I'm sure this behavior will hurt the batteries in the long run. This charger is suitable for occasional use, but not for long-term battery maintenance.

Pros
  • Battery chargers
Cons
  • I really don't like them, everything is fine
