Ordered new batteries and the low battery indicator stayed on with the new battery. I pulled out my trusty voltmeter and the voltage on these new batteries was 1.58 volts, which is great (1.50 volts nominal). I then checked the original battery which I took out and it read 1.53 volts so everything was fine - so the thermometer was wrong. The bottom line is, don't always trust the low battery indicator. These replacement batteries are individually packed and tested in boxes of 10. The thermometer reads very accurately what it should, as long as I ignore the false battery warning I'm fine.
