This is a great telephoto zoom lens. When I bought my X-T1, I realized once again that I have a taste for champagne: I immediately fell in love with all these great prime lenses that are now available for the X-mount: 56mm, this one amazing 23mm. and for the tele I was happy with the idea of using another zoom lens alongside the 18-55 kit lens that came with the camera and I started staring at the expensive 55-200mm. But the truth is I don't have a budget for champignons and I started researching the cons of this 50-230 in comparison. I haven't found many. The sample photos I saw looked sharp and clear, with good options for shallow depth of field. The lack of an aperture ring on the lens itself didn't bother me at all. Manual focus seems like what you really want to use here, as autofocus is slow (hopefully the long-awaited firmware update will deliver all the wonders, big and small, that we're hoping for). What worries me the most is the overall feel of this lens. It's amazing how the lighter weight, plastic mount, and less-than-perfect zoom silence affect your "psychophotographic" mood while shooting. Somehow you realize that you handle the camera differently. I hope that's all in my head, but even the feeling of the lens sitting on the camera body is less secure. However, I have a hard time imagining more exciting results. I happily save up for one of those revered wide angle lenses, have been enjoying every minute of it since 18-55 and hope that one day they will offer a replacement metal mount for this more than satisfactory TV.
