Firstly I'm definitely not a professional photographer and can't justify buying L glass, but I shoot with a Canon 60D and the other lens I have is an EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, so I got used to fast focusing and a huge aperture. While fifty bucks is awesome for a lot of things, given the 60D crop factor, it's a bit limiting. I needed a good zoom lens for portraits and indoors, so I started looking at the 28-135. After weighing a few reviews, I bought it from Revain for $200. (You can find it cheaper elsewhere for about $20.) Pros: VERY fast and quiet focusing. I cannot praise USM enough. Excellent focal length range and color reproduction. Permanent manual focus is possible if you want to lock the motor. Sexy smooth focus ring. Price. About 1/3 the cost of most other lenses in this focal range. Macro photography is a good addition. The metal bracket feels good. Image stabilization is useful when recording videos or when your hands are shaking. I turned mine off because I find the tiny buzz a bit annoying. Cons: It is VERY heavy. Some pain really. The case is good but some plastic. The lenses crawl. Pooh. I knew it was a problem, but I didn't realize how little movement it took to make it telescope again. The zoom ring itself is fine. Aperture is good, but not outstanding. You don't get much depth in portraits, but it's so consistently sharp that I don't care. Overall I am very happy with this lens. This gives range, sharpness and fast focusing. Yes, there are some downsides since it's older, but don't let anyone tell you that you can't get amazing shots just because your glass isn't worth $2,000. This is a great buy if you are on a budget.
