Like others I have had strings and they spin very quickly but have issues with durability. Some reviews have misconceptions about this spinner. Some speak of a mechanical advantage. This is actually overdrive, meaning the basket is spinning faster than the crank is spinning. But we're only talking about the 3:1 ratio; Twist the knob one full turn and the basket will do it to you. Therefore, the rotation speed of the basket is not as high as some types of strings. However, with a little work, I can get my torn lettuce nice and dry. Some note gear slippage, but slippage does not occur. The rotating disk in the lid engages with the teeth of the basket. If you hear the gears slip, it's a short slip between the lid and the basket. It doesn't do any harm, but the sound bothers some. By holding the cap with your left hand with your thumb at the narrowest part of the cap between the crank and the rim, this slipping is minimized. Some have mentioned that the lid doesn't latch, but that's not necessary as the mechanism doesn't require the lid to be pulled away from the bowl and the handle leaves enough room for the hand to rest on the lid when the handle is rotated. Some have mentioned the lack of a stop button, but this mechanism doesn't need one either. You just stop turning the handle. If you stabilize the salad bowl with one hand and turn the handle, it feels solid. I will gladly trade spinner speed for good design and construction.
