wiring problem? No sound no mic

Based on the reviews I want them to work and I have the sound I expect from this brand. My headset is registered to my Windows 10 computers, I was able to adjust the volume etc. However, there was no sound in the headset and the microphone was not working. I suspect something is wrong with the mini jack used to connect the USB device. I sent them back the same day - so no damage apart from an unexpected trip to the UPS store.
