Very dense and dense material. Cut to size and install directly into existing filter systems. I like that it's pre-washed (a light rinse over the sink is still recommended), but I could use it alone for mechanical removal of fine and dense particles and chemical filtration as it's a pad with added carbon acts. Great item for the hobby aquarist. As long as you have a biological substrate to keep beneficial bacteria in your filtration system, this carbon pad can replace mechanical filtration with additional chemical filtration to keep odors down.
