the clip must be grounded
no indication if the clip is not grounded. with no indication that there is no ground, no reading, leads to the assumption that you don't have a hot wire. On a motorcycle many of the bolts are rubber insulated and the motors are mounted on rubber so continuity is sometimes required. But the tool works fine as described.
