Update: I've been taking this for two years, two caps twice a day. I notice if I forget. And I tried a fancier/more expensive brand that had more per bottle so I don't have to reorder as often, and it was like not taking them at all. Back to the Swanson full spectrum for me.I'm not really an "herbal remedy" kind of girl, but this really does work for me. I noticed a significant boost in mood and energy (being really down in the dumps makes you feel like everything is too much work) when I was taking it. I stopped taking it after a move, basically forgot all about my vitamins (this was with those, not with prescription meds). I'm not clinically depressed, but I'm having some specific life events which involve a lot of waiting and anxiety, a lot of unknowns, a lot of inner hamster-wheeling and what-to-doing. I started taking the Tulsi again, two caps before bed, and woke up feeling refreshed and actually. Happy. It's so nice not to wake up miserable, waking up in a bad/sad mood is like starting out with a negative balance when you know the day is unlikely to make any deposits in the plus column. If I take these before bed, I sleep well and wake well. If I take them in the morning because I forgot to take them at night, I definitely notice. The psychoactive agents in Tulsi are Ocimumosides A and B and Ursolic Acid. According to my (very light) research on these molecular compounds, they have shown a positive effect on rats that are subjected to CUS - chronic unpredictable stress - as a pretreatment. Meaning that rats given the Tulsi do not experience the same deleterious effects on the brain and cortisol levels under continuous stress as those who did not. I'm not sure that this would help someone who is experiencing depression, but I hope it will help others who are experiencing chronic unpredictable stress to stay on top of it by boosting their body's ability to cope with it and not get so ground down and worn thin. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs to adapt to a high level of stress or uncertainty. I don't know if it works for people with depression or an anxiety disorder resulting from a neurochemical imbalance, but it's sure worth a try. It doesn't affect your serotonin production, so discontinuation probably wouldn't make you feel sick, and I can honestly say that it works within hours. If you don't see an improvement in your mood in the 24-48 hours of trying it, it might not be right for your specific situation.
