Review on Neewer Foldable Octagonal Softbox with Bowens Mount Speedring: Perfect for Studio Flash Monolight, Portraits, and Product Photography by Paul Ziegler

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Pleasantly surprised by the quality.

My first impression is that this softbox is of very good quality. The umbrella's poles, bracket and material are all professional quality. I'd say it's not a quick and easy travel rig, unlike your main wing which you can open quickly and is heavy (which also speaks to its durability). I would have liked a small manual. It takes a bit of "hum" to get the bars in place, but I think that's a good sign that they're tight. A few bars were bent after the first disassembly, so I hope they won't break after regular use, and I hope you can buy more if they break. I think the best part, and the reason I bought it, is the 3 (or maybe 4?) stages of diffusion: the light hits the vanity top, then the back of the umbrella, which is white (not silver). , then to the middle white diffuser layer, and finally to the outer white diffuser. Essentially all hotspots are eliminated. I bought a Bowens mount separately to attach to my Yongnuo flash (pictured). I wish it had a net but it's a pretty good price and all. I hope to add a shot of the head soon to show the spread of the light.

Pros
  • Easy to use
