Review on πŸ”§ Enhanced Steel Upgrade for Improved Performance: 68RFE Transmission Spin On Filter Screw by John Patterson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Also suitable for 45RFE and 5-45RFE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when increasing line pressure

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when increasing line pressure to avoid transmission failure. TWICE I've used a standard plastic screw on the filter screw and twice I've had to replace the gear box. If you don't put on the plastic spin-on filter correctly or too tightly, it can come loose or, even better, FALL INTO THE PAN. The second time caused the most damage when it completely detached while driving and I lost all hydraulic pressure in the transmission resulting in overheating. Not only did it overheat, it also flew all the torque converter clutch material and metal slivers around. Even a small gap or loosening of the spin-on filter and you lose all the pressure in the transmission. This replacement is a VERY important part and worth the cost. It does not make sense to use plastic PVC material under high pressure. Even spin-on engine oil filters use metal threads. I used blue thread lock to hold the screw in the gearbox fitting, so when I do other maintenance I just unscrew the spin-on filter and the metal thread is already there like an engine oil adapter. Of course, remove the plastic screw from the new filter and keep it away from the gearbox. Since it's a plastic upgrade, I was able to tighten the filter down a bit to about 20 lb-ft. Driven more than 500 km since then without any problems. MAKE SURE to screw the metal piece firmly into the filter before screwing into the gearbox when using for the first time. If you use threadlocker, only use it on the side that will be screwed into the gearbox (long side). Therefore, after the first tightening, it should be set for the next service, whether you tighten it by hand or with a torque wrench.

Pros
  • Spare parts
Cons
  • Some small things
