Review on Enhanced Brake Hose Kit for 2008 G8 GT - Russell by Edelbrock 692210 by Jim Bijelic

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great upgrade for any car especially G8 GT - a must have

I bought these for my G8 GT as it's an inexpensive upgrade with solid benefits. I always do a specific upgrade for every decent car I care about. Revain had them for the same price as everywhere else, except shipping was free thanks to Revain Prime, so choosing Revain wasn't hard. The item was dispatched and delivered quickly and was a perfect match for the Pontiac G8 GT. IN THE BOX: Everything you need is included except fluid: come with instructions as you will be expected to either know how this replacement is made or take it to an experienced mechanic. Please have this done by an experienced mechanic if you are unfamiliar with such a service as this is your braking system and serious problems can arise if you do something wrong and it doesn't work. However, for simplicity, towards the end I list the torque specifications as well as a suggestion for brake fluid. WHY YOU SHOULD DO IT: There are several reasons why you should use stainless/braided brake lines for your flexible brake lines and I'll list them briefly in the pros below. Basically, it's better for the longevity of your brake fluid, it improves pedal feel and modulation, it gives you better overall braking performance: in other words, your braking system offers a whole world of benefits. Here's another reason why: When you use your brakes, they transfer heat from the brake fluid. This heat degrades brake fluid over time and can absorb moisture through the OEM rubber hoses. The moisture then boils in the brake lines and turns into vapour/air. Hence the feeling of "rubber" or "weakness" in your brakes, as brake fluid and water don't typically "compress" but air/vapour does. For this reason, it is recommended to bleed the brakes once or twice a year. Braided stainless steel tubing helps virtually eliminate moisture penetration into the tubing. BENEFITS: * Firm and correct brake modulation * Virtually eliminates moisture absorption/evaporation contamination of brake fluid * Firm pedal feel = more confidence when braking * Better overall brake control All of this can contribute to greater stopping power and therefore the ability to stop your vehicle sooner than with standard lines. This can be the difference between a "close call" and something worse. REPLACEMENT: It's as simple as taking the wheels off and swapping out the rubber hoses for these new lines and then bleeding the system. **Brake Fluid**: Find brake fluid with a high 'wet' and 'dry' boiling point as good as you can afford. For the G8 GT you need 1.5 liters of fluid when using all 4 wheels. The system requires 1 liter, with an additional half liter you can properly bleed the system. I recommend the Motul RBF600 for its extremely high performance. It's more expensive than some, but it lasts MUCH longer. Here's a way to buy a Motul RBF 600: Motul RBF 600 Racing Brake Fluid To be honest, you definitely have to bleed the entire system, even if you only swap 1 line. There are instructions on the web if you search for them, but most shop mechanics still know how to do it: 1. Remove wheels 2. Remove old lines 3. Install new lines 4. Bleed the system. Pontiac G8 GT straight from a GM repair manual. Torque specifications: * Exhaust valve: 12 Nm / 106 lb-in (lb-in!) * Banjo bolt: 35 Nm / 26 lb-in * Brake pipe nut: 15 Nm / 11 lb-ft (this is not from the Official Pontiac Master Mechanic's Repair Manual) Brake pipe nuts are usually a nuisance on any car, they have to be "clicked" quickly to release them. I offer a quality wrench that will not loosen or break fittings.
