I have bought several of these magnetic mounts for various things. Both a flat mount like this one and one that has the stem sticking out at the back to allow it to rotate when installed. I installed it in my truck in the upper left corner of the windshield. I put a metal disc on the rear camera mount. The magnet allows me to easily remove the camera and doesn't have to permanently attach the camera to the windshield. The magnet is pretty permanent, but if the camera isn't working I can still put my phone or something in it. It's just very convenient. The 3M VHB tape on the back of the magnet holder is to ensure it doesn't detach from the windshield until I want it to. Very happy with the purchase. As for the other mounts, I installed one in my car for a cellphone. I have an iPhone with a stand case. I tried the metal plate inside the case but didn't feel the magnet was strong enough to hold it securely. I glued a metal plate to the outside of the case and it works great. It doesn't look bad and I never realize it's there.
