That 'barrier' at the top of the stairs is worse than nothing. I can't imagine how these "gates" can work to prevent a child from falling down the stairs and they create many opportunities for entanglement. The straps, even when fully tightened, slide easily up and down the railing, creating enough gaps to allow a child's head or limbs to be trapped. The buckles don't seem strong enough to withstand any pressure on the fabric let alone a child pinching it and as far as I can tell there is no way to attach the buckles out of a child's line of sight - so create it a fun challenge that really lures baby to the stairs. The product is beautiful and well made. I assume this works fine for pets, but it's not a child gate.
