Unsafe, cheap, nearly started an electrical fire

I wish I could give this a ZERO. You are not sure! I'm mad at Emerson for making horrible switches because we almost had a fire this morning due to a faulty switch in my twins' nursery. We have six of these fan/light switches in our house (installed by a contractor in 2007) and two of them blew last year. The first did no "damage" and just didn't turn on the light or fan. We replaced the Emerson derailleur with another but to this day didn't realize how awful they were. During today's incident the fan and light switches were off, but we opened the nursery door and saw that the light was on and the fan was running at full blast. The room reeked of burnt rubber where the cable jacket had started to melt, and the Emerson metal front panel and control box were brown where they had melted/burned. The wiring was intact and it wasn't an installation error, it was just caused by something in the control box. The wall and switch felt hot. We replaced 2 of these today with a similar Hunter unit that we purchased from Lowe's and plan to replace the other 4 tomorrow. I don't want to endanger my kids or risk my house burning down to save a few bucks. I am INCREDIBLY dissatisfied with this product and have contacted Emerson directly to complain. Even before the switch burned out, I was unhappy with them - every time you adjust the rotation speed, the units flash and slide with difficulty. Our new Hunter derailleur is MUCH easier to slide. My advice - choose a brand that specializes in ceiling fans, be careful and DO NOT order that Emerson junk!
