I made a mistake and bought this after trying to cancel my order for another similar sharpener that was about half the price. Well the first one wasn't canceled I used it then I got this one. Long story short, I'm stuck with two similarly designed sharpeners. I have to give one away, but this gave me a unique opportunity to compare them side by side. Suitable for you: Most importantly, both work great. Another cheaper one sharpened just as well as this one and now all my knives are pretty scary. I was very impressed with the performance of this type of sharpener. I'm sure you could do better with rocks but I don't know how and to be honest I don't need sharper blades than these. They take dull knives and turn them into deadly ones in about thirty seconds, so kudos on all counts. To get a better idea of how good they are I also have a cheap little sharpener that works with sharpening rods. I sharpened a dull knife in it and it barely cut the paper. Then, AFTER I sharpened the knife in it, I sharpened it in one of them, and now this thing cuts paper very well. In my opinion, this is just an excellent design. That's it, now let's get into the details. Like I said, this type of sharpener definitely works no matter how much you pay for it, so the question is would I buy this again or go the cheaper route? Well, looking at two, this (I'm going to call it the classic from now on) base is made of sturdy nylon (a very strong, durable plastic that can be made into gears and tools) and is beautifully sculpted. It looks pretty good, has a classy matte finish and I think it will hold up well despite being plastic. However, the other (I'll call it the X1 from now on) has a metal base, and while the finish isn't as nice (you can see some lines on the molding that shouldn't be there), I have it around the X1 on that front to get a win, but only a little. If the Classic had a metal base, I think it would have outperformed the X1. Well, having said that, I think everything else about Classic is better; The levers look better and better shaped, they feel more solid, and the gears that support them are of better quality than the X1. The Classic is softer to use and I feel the cutting edges are much better on the Classic too. You can see from the design alone that they put more emphasis on the GRINDING part with the Classic and more on the BASE part with the X1. Conclusion: I think the Classic will hold up better than the X1, but I'm not sure. I don't think it's necessarily worth twice the price. The X1 can do everything the Classic can and I don't think I'll be wearing one of those any time soon. I think if you want a functional sharpener then this is a good choice. If you sharpen every day, you'll likely get more out of the Classic. If you only use it occasionally, you'll get the same performance if you go the cheaper route and buy another similar design. There are a few X1 reviews that show photos of the levers being broken, while the Classic doesn't have many negative reviews. The Classic, however, has about 1/10 ratings, so take it with a pinch of salt. I personally like the Classic better and I will give the X1 away. Also, I think the X1 is made in China and lately I've been trying to narrow it down. Thank you for your attention! I hope it helps!
