This is normal. I have a recent bath mat that I spent a lot of money on at a big store. He's been doing this for over 10 years and only now does he look rough. (I wash my bathmat twice a week - only my husband and I use it when we shower). At the time, my husband complained that I was "spending a lot of money just for a towel." In retrospect it was worth it. This set of towels is fine. The carpets are not as thick and big as my original. After the tag was removed, a carpet was ripped off with a small "T" shaped plastic tag attached to it. I washed them before use and they have shed and unrolled. They came out of the dryer covered in little white globules all over. I'm currently on my third wash to see if I can get rid of any remaining lint before using. Again, they're ok - good for the price. They are certainly easier to wash and dry than a thicker rug. If you're looking for something that really works, I recommend going to your local lingerie store and paying a little more.
