I have compared this magnetic doorstop to another cheaper type at Revain which is the most popular buy and have bought and compared both. Another type does not have a large metal ball but has two round metal disks that make contact with their mating surface from the side of the door. Both were good. It has a "shock absorber" on the small part and the large part. A small part of the shock absorber is just a spring. This is usually a piston filled with oil. It also holds shut with very adequate strength. This device has a higher quality finish than the other device. Warning, the bottom of most is a bit larger than I expected. Due to the shape of my base plate, I couldn't vary the height much. If your door is set fairly high compared to the motherboard (large gap under the door) you may have trouble aligning the two pieces vertically. Alignment is critical to proper holding power.
