I bought a set two years ago and the last set on June 3rd of this year. I use them outdoors to provide shade for our plants during the summer months. I have trimmed to two of the six clips of the first set and five of the second set. Why? See pics. UV and heat kills the plastic - I know that, so keep them out of direct sunlight (UV). Maybe not too much about temperature changes. Cracks around the hinges are somewhat predictable but the spring breaking through the plastic handle was a surprise The springs are in my opinion too strong for the type of plastic used - i.e. cheap I won I won't be again order some of these. Metal would be better for my application but rust will have to be put up with. I think I found a rock and an anvil. [UPDATE 7/7/19] I just lost two more of the new ones n. hinge fracture. Apparently the spring is too strong for the plastic. I'm not sure I wouldn't have to open the jaws wide if they could have lasted longer. They've been up and running for less than five weeks. I won't buy these again.
