I've never purchased shapewear, so this is my first experience with this type of product. I like the fit of this bodysuit and it's comfort, but I can't say it did much shaping. I bought an xL based on my measurements on the size chart and it fits perfectly, especially in the butt area, however I probably should have gone with a large for more "shaping." I don't know how it would have fit on my bottom though. nobody wants those weird tight lines that make your butt look like exploded biscuit dough! You may want to size down for actual shaping and tightening, just a heads up.
