The original remote control was bent, so if you bring it to the edge of the table, it will fall off. It must have fallen dozens of times. Something came loose before the warranty expired, but it was such a tedious process to replace that I didn't even try. This new remote works just the way you want it to. The directional buttons and select button are more prominent, making them easier to use. The channel and volume buttons light up. It's flat so you don't have to worry about it slipping off the table. And a nice feature is that it has abcd buttons on the main remote which the old remote didn't have. I haven't tested all of the buttons and some of them don't do anything, but all of the ones I need or want to use work well and it's a much cheaper alternative than buying the official $80-90 button.
