Good inexpensive medium that can also anchor plants

This product is very difficult to review unless it's the only material in the filter. For my new external filter in my equally new 75g tank. I decided to diversify the environment to try and attract all sorts of bacteria. I added an entire tray of Matrix and a tray of this and Bioballs together. I keep all my media in bags because they get stuck between things and make it difficult to clean. Here it is sufficient to shake the aquarium water in a bucket and rinse it out and it is clean. Many reviewers noted that it is not porous like other mediums. That's right. It seems smoother, but if you look at it you can see the texture where bacteria can grow. Also, since I used a very porous matrix as well as porous lava rock in the tank, it has a different surface that will hopefully attract a different type of bacteria in the long run to help. So far the cycle has been slow. Part of that was the low PH issue I was causing. It took a little over a week for the nitrites to show up and the ammonia to drop. I use ammonia drops and dose above 2ppm. This mimics a fairly high germ load, so it lasts longer than a single fish, but it's more humane and allows for more fish to be added while cycling. nitrite to zero. I already have nitrates, so he's on the way. I can't say for sure if this product or others will work, but so far I've had good results with this product. It's very inexpensive and I have a supply that I can use to anchor plants when needed. It's cheap, easy to clean, and I feel better knowing it's in the filter and helping.
