Does not replace biological media

They are 5 times cheaper than the popular "Eheim Mech" ceramic rings and work the same way. This product is primarily a mechanical pre-filter. It breaks up larger dirt particles and traps them on ceramic surfaces. You must perform the filtration with a fine mechanical filter such as a sponge or thread. Although the rings have some biological activity, they are NOT considered biological filter media. You have to have some kind of biological environment in your system. So the ideal setup for aโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Bio rings do not need to be replaced
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine

Stick with a brand I trust

Have used them in the past on other aquariums with great success and bought them again for a new canister filter. Just put them in one of the trays and leave them alone. I put them after the foam filters so they don't get too dirty and before the purigen. If necessary, simply rinse them with some aquarium water (do not rinse with rinse water or you will destroy your biological filter!) so that you can restore your biological filter without damaging or recycling it. Cons
  • Not sure

So before washing I counted the number to know how much I had. The results are given in the boxes in the image. They are not very (if at all) porous. They are fairly smooth with a glassy surface. Even the fragments in the boxes are smooth except for the cracks. If it were a closed system I'd say take a hammer and smash to get the shards, but they should have been used in the contraption and the gravel itself. I'm trying to return them because I didn't receive the promised amount, they have bigโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Providing a porous surface to aid biological filtration
Cons
  • Interchangeable

Good inexpensive medium that can also anchor plants

This product is very difficult to review unless it's the only material in the filter. For my new external filter in my equally new 75g tank. I decided to diversify the environment to try and attract all sorts of bacteria. I added an entire tray of Matrix and a tray of this and Bioballs together. I keep all my media in bags because they get stuck between things and make it difficult to clean. Here it is sufficient to shake the aquarium water in a bucket and rinse it out and it is clean.
