Review on Hikari Aquarium Solutions Bacto Surge Small Foam Filter: Optimal Filtration for Your Aquarium by Karen Perez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Soft sponge, heavy base

Received exactly as expected. I trust the Hikari brand and buy their pet food. Was in the market for a sponge filter for my 20 gallon. This filter comes with a plastic tube that is fixed in the middle of the sponge cage. I cut it out to install an air stone, which is easy enough, but fitting an air duct inside is cumbersome (but possible) for this style of construction. The short-wide shape of the sponge is quite odd and probably reduces the amount of buoyancy you can get (it comes with a standard sized tube for more buoyancy), but overall I like the quality of the sponge. The base is heavier weight compared to many brands so it stands up well and stays in place. It comes with a few sample packs of groceries. (If you're looking for an air stone, Aquarium Co-op sells one on their website that makes very fine bubbles, which I highly recommend, although I don't recommend their sponge filter unless you have special, unusual needs, because they do has very large pores and a very rough/prickly texture.)
