Review on Positioning Aluminum Rectangular Clamping Picture by Kevin Folsom

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Cute little square

Due to its small size, the functionality of this square is somewhat limited. But it can do excellent things like checking the squareness of a chisel edge, checking a saw blade for squareness, or quickly checking a board edge for squareness. Because of its small size, you'll want to carry it in an apron pocket. However, it took 2 attempts to get a good result. Both the squares I ordered were square both inside and out compared to the woodpecker square. The first square I got had mechanical markings on one of the reference faces, and the anodized surface was a bit uneven in places. The second square I received was very well finished on all sides. A few user experience notes: none of them make this square unusable, but if they were eliminated the product would get 5 stars. First remove the dimension labels. It's a small square, not a tweak tool. Yes, multi-tools can be useful and effective, but sometimes a specific tool (like this one) just needs to be a single-function tool. The measurement markings are not precise enough, and may not be easy enough to read, to use to accurately set the sawing or cutting height. And second, the measurement line marking is engraved or stamped on the square. So if you are testing an inside corner against an angle (e.g. a saw blade set at 90 degrees) with this angle, these line marks can be easily visible when checking for gaps. And third, while the red anodized finish is nice, it shouldn't be shiny or reflective. A satin or matte finish reduces glare and makes the distance check more visible on your workpiece. So a functional square that will come in handy and find a place in my toolbox. A few small tweaks will make this tool even better.
