Review on 🔥 Mishimoto Black Baffled Oil Catch Can by Devin Lee

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not bad, but not great either.

Excellent quality tin. There are many options for catchers for my Volkswagen (42draftdesigns, 034motorsport, integrated engineering, etc.) but I went with this one instead. I met the Mishimoto rep at a car meet a few months ago and he was a really nice guy - very knowledgeable. The first thing that strikes you when you order this jar is the packaging. It comes in a fairly large box but when you open it everything is well packed and organized. Hardware and clips are packaged in a cute little zippered pouch. The hose clamps that come with them are black, which I love as I've always been annoyed by shiny hose clamps versus black silicone hoses, but I think that just speaks to my OCD. Hose but I didn't actually use one as my standard PCV system on my VW uses a 3/4 inch hose. Luckily the 3/4" silicone hose I purchased was able to cut through the 5/8" fitting on the surge tank without leaking. Later I bought matching silicone adapters to keep things tidy. One complaint I have about the tubing that comes with the can is that there was this disgusting residue on the inside of the tubing - almost like yellow snot. I don't know what the heck it was so I just threw it away. The other part I like is that it comes apart easily and oh my god it's a sexy can. After playing with this in your hands, you can tell that this is a really well-made thing. Incredibly durable. The filter is pretty awesome - unlike the old wire mesh catcher I had (which never cleans properly), this filter cleans well with some hot water and soap. And you can literally put this thing anywhere. After installing the bracket, you can orient the glass in any direction. So let's say your glass "must" fit in a certain place and you "need" the inlet to point "this" direction, that's no problem with this glass. Place the bracket where you need the can and you can face the can in any direction. Two complaints about the design. First, the entrance is at the top. While you can mount it anywhere as long as the inlet is pointing straight up, it becomes difficult to route hoses unless you're looking for additional fittings, of course. My second complaint is that the glass doesn't close well. I continued to be given a mixture of oil and water in a jar after the winter ended. I had to use duct tape to seal the threads on all the fittings as well as the glass itself before the oil/water mixture was completely gone. Using the trap in winter sucks, and the Mishimoto can is no exception. But during the normal summer months, my intercooler tubes remain pristine. I empty the jar about once a month and am always amazed at how much stuff it holds. I'm about to reinstall my standard PVC system right now next winter so I don't have to deal with the oil/water mixture going through the filter and frozen cans. charges FUN amounts of money for extras. It's almost blackmail. And I'm not talking about $10 to $15. We're talking about $52! FOR A SAMPLE! That's almost 30% of what I paid for the whole can! And to top it off, you can't buy the faucet anywhere else but direct from Mishimoto, and they'll charge you $12 shipping to ship a nifty little faucet that you can slip in an envelope. Before you buy a glass, Mishimoto should have a drop down menu to select what accoutrement you want and at a much cheaper price. Because let's face it, if this can really is as versatile as it's made to be, why charge such a premium for extra features? Expands the concept of "universal" a bit, doesn't it?

Pros
  • Trays and drain plugs
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
