This lock comes with a pre-installed four digit code. The chain's shackles are quite strong and will take some time to break. I can't comment on how quickly the lock itself is picked by a thief, but having four different numbers from one to six really helps, many others only have three, and four adds a whole range of combinations (from 216 to 1296 combinations). . However, I use it as a secondary lock to prevent my front wheel from being stolen. It's not my primary lock and I wouldn't trust it as my primary lock. It's a heavy chain for the price and the lock feels very solid, I like it better than the much thinner 3 combo cords that cost about the same.
