Review on Inkbird Display Temperature Controller ITC 106VH by Matt Simpson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good value for money, does what it promises, tenth digit has carry error.

I use it to turn a toaster oven into a soldering oven. I opened the oven and plugged in a solid state relay instead of a mechanical thermostat. The temperature sensor that came with this unit is questionable - the readings were everywhere. Instead I use another K-type thermocouple sensor and it works great. InkBird's PID temperature controller does what it's supposed to - it controls the temperature of my oven well. Autotune mode works fine. I set it to 150 degrees Celsius in autotune mode and let it run for a few minutes. I watched the controller move the temperature and eventually stop at 150C. In subsequent tests I just turned everything on and it brought the temperature up to 150C and held it within a few degrees with a little over or under. I used an external thermocouple thermometer to take readings every 15 seconds. I recorded and recorded temperature changes to create a temperature profile. Build quality is good - surprising given the cheap nature of this product (I looked inside - PCB and components are fine). There is at least one bug in the firmware that I have seen so far with the displayed temperature. If the temperature slowly rises or falls - let's say the reading changes slowly in 0.1°C increments - the reading suddenly jumps a degree - as if the tenth digit prematurely transitioned to the ones digit (except 0 or 9). . I notice this at room temperature with my hand under the sensor. The rising body heat is enough to cause a slow rise in temperature. The temperature readings appear to be in error, and that doesn't inspire much confidence. But even if the display was 1 degree off, it would still fit my needs and control the temperature accurately enough. It's good value for money, which is why I'm giving it four stars. The manual is terrible, but you can decipher it by reading it a few times. One might think that for these Chinese products, they could find a fluent English speaking person to write the manual, especially if they sell this product in America. I'll do some more experiments and update this review when I know more.
