Review on Dimmable LED, Halogen & Incandescent Bulbs: Lutron Diva DVWCL-153PH-WH Single/3-Way White Wallplate Dimmer by Glenn Kumar

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works but doesn't impress.

I have had Lutron dimmers in my home for over 12 years and just decided it was time to switch out my incandescent bulbs for LEDs. After putting dimmable LEDs in fixtures attached to old-school Diva switches, I had mixed results so purchased this 3-pack of CL Diva switches and a single one.First off, with regard to this specific product (the 3-pack), all three were, in fact, the CL Diva switches and they were new unlike some of the other reviews. However, unlike the single one, the 3-pack didn't include the wire nuts described in the instructions. I contacted revain chat to confirm that the 3-pack should've been fulfilled with the required hardware and they verified it. Unable to send out separate parts, they offered to credit me with a discount so that I could purchase the wire nuts locally but I declined as I was only in need of the small wire nuts necessary to cap off the 3-way wire since the existing switches had the other necessary wire nuts. The important thing was to know that they should've been included and that there are still some issues with fulfillment of this product. (full disclosure, even after my refusal, the revain rep sent me an e-mail stating that a partial credit was issued - well above the cost of 3 small wire nuts)As for the Lutron CL Diva switches themselves, they are of the same build quality as the previous iteration and I am just as pleased with them now as ever. I grew to like the little paddle glow that was part of the old Diva but it was a surprise with those and, in some installations, it flickered so I probably won't miss it much. Two things I've been unimpressed with regarding the CL Diva are the fact that it doesn't resolve the lag time associated with turning on and off the LEDs nor does the trim switch have as fine an adjustment as I would've expected.I'd been using LEDs for a few weeks with my old-school Diva switches and the lag was my main reason I thought the CL switches would be more appropriate. There doesn't seem to be any difference and I've tested it with bulbs both listed in their support documentation as well as generics from a big box store. As for the trim switch, I was expecting a wheel as described in the instructions but it is more a lever and it is very touchy even though it doesn't have the micro-adjustments I imagined from the description. Yes, it allows me to set a lower bottom dim point than the old-school Diva switch could manage with LEDs but it took several tries to find that point without going past it (I actually did with one switch and will have to take the cover off one more time to adjust it again). All in all, I guess I'm glad to have purchased the CL dimmers and will use this experience to set the bar for what my CL Maestro purchase process will be like - those are more critical in my situation because the "off" position still sends enough power to the fixtures for LED's to glow where incandescent bulbs wouldn't. If you are on the fence and already have the old-school Diva switch, it all depends on how dim you need to go as to whether you bother with the CL Diva; in my opinion and experience of course.

Pros
  • ‎1 Kiloamps
Cons
  • May cause bulbs to emit a humming sound
